2 years agoLACK OF ACCESS TO DRINKING WATER
Access to clean drinking water is a major issue in the Gargar village in Gyulaqarak, Lori province.
Water supply system was constructed in 1950-70th. The internal water distribution network is not in working condition today, consisting of decayed and corroded pipes. Such unfavorable conditions result in an unregulated water outflow and increase the risk of excessive particles penetrating and affecting the quality of the drinking water.
Children regularly bring separate drinking water bottles with their names to the kindergarten along with their toys and other supplies.
The water for cooking meals is brought from a neighboring village, and The Medical Institution, the Administrative Center, and the House of Culture (sports establishment) have no access to clean drinking water.
NEW PIPELINE FOR CLEAN DRINKING WATER SUPPLY
The Urban Foundation for Sustainable Development in cooperation with Armenian Energy Agency and with assistance of the Embassy of Japan in Armenia is implementing the project for “Renovation of Drinking Water Supply System and Public School in Gargar village”. In the framework of the mentioned project, the design of the internal water distribution network reconstruction has been developed.
Today, there is a need to install an additional pipeline distributing clean drinking water to the school and other community establishments. Our project goal is to build a new 900 meters long pipeline connecting the internal distribution network of the recently built pipeline and the village school.
AS A RESULT OF THIS PROJECT
The condition of Gargar's water supply system will worsen if we don't build the pipeline today, and very soon the pipeline will become completely unusable. The children of Gargar will remember taking water bottles to school each day for the rest of their lives.
WHO WE ARE
The mission of the Urban Foundation is to contribute to sustainable and balanced development of communities.
The Urban Foundation’s staff has been working together for over 20 years. The Armenian team of the Washington-based Urban Institute implemented the Armenia Earthquake Zone Recovery Program (EQZRP) from 2000 to 2004 in more than ten rural and urban communities in Armenia’s earthquake zone (Shirak, Lori, and Aragatsotn marzes), resulting in permanent housing for 7,000 households displaced by the 1988 earthquake.
Exceptional teamwork brought great success, and in 2004 the core team established the Urban Foundation for Sustainable Development, recognizing that as a team and as individual experts, they have a sound potential to support the development and democratization of the Armenian communities.
This was the beginning of a long journey towards decent life in a healthy environment.
