“60+ Perfect Age to Live” program, led by the Association of Healthcare and Assistance for Older People (AHAOP), marks a milestone in elder care in Armenia. It delivers comprehensive healthcare and education, bolsters social engagement, and strengthens community integration, redefining Armenia’s seniors' support framework.

THE PROBLEM

Armenia is experiencing a demographic shift, with a significant increase in the elderly population outnumbering the younger generation. It creates new societal challenges; families often face the challenge of elder care, dealing with issues such as idleness, loneliness, and a sense of obsolescence among their senior members, which can lead to a decline in health and feelings of low self-worth. This is compounded by the guilt experienced by family members, who are often torn between their professional obligations and the desire to provide more comprehensive care and attention. Our priority is to create new opportunities for older adults and contribute to healthy longevity.

OUR SOLUTION

AHAOP developed a specialized Adult Day Center in Yerevan, a pioneer of social innovation to alleviate the complex issues confronting seniors and their families.

At this center, older people can indulge in activities tailored to their interests fostering engagement and community contribution. They can also receive medical advice, with professional services geared toward cognitive health, Alzheimer's prevention, physical activity, and maintaining self-esteem through age-appropriate programs.

Additionally, the center is distinctive for its dedicated program for older adults with dementia (Alzheimer's disease).

Mrs. Hasmik's Journey: From Solitude to Community Engagement

Mrs. Hasmik’s life took a remarkable turn upon joining the AHAOP Innovation Centre. Formerly an engineer at the Mergelian Institute, at 85, she discovered the art of Marashi embroidery at our Center, mastering its intricate techniques and forging meaningful friendships. Beyond the Center's walls, these connections flourished, infusing her life with newfound vitality. As a member of the Elderly Creativity Lab, she contributes her skills in needlework, radiating joy and inspiration. Her transformation demonstrates hope to her family, who rejoice in her happiness and a newfound sense of security and belonging. Mrs. Hasmik also plays a pivotal role as an active Association's Council of Elders member.

Mrs. Gohar's Transformation: From Fear to Fulfillment

At 81 years old, Mrs. Gohar, who had been concerned about her health, has undergone a significant transformation since joining the Association's daycare center. Her health has improved remarkably. She now spends most of her days at the Center, where she is engaged. Here, she keeps busy and enjoys sharing stories of her eventful life with her peers and the staff, often captivating everyone. She's mentally more at peace, free from the anxieties that used to worry her. This positive change has also brought improvements to her family.
