16 days agoThe "Matemik in Artsakh" program has been started since 2021. Now it plans the 4th stage of the program, the goal of which is to ensure the educational and academic growth of Artsakh students through online, extracurricular activities.
The purpose of Mathematics Schools is to form a generation armed with a high level of knowledge, to make a change in children's perceptions of school subjects.
The "Matemik in Artsakh" program provides more than 300 students from Artsakh the opportunity to continue studying school subjects with over 100 volunteer teachers.
In parallel with that, the children of the families who will settle in Lori marz as a result of forced displacement will have the opportunity to attend Vahagni Mathemagic school.
At least 30 students of Vahagn community of Lori marz will study mathematics in depth and thoroughly, using high-quality literature and modern technologies.
The school has been operating since June 2023 and has already managed to accept 15 children from the Vahagn community. During classes, children of grades 5-7 study mathematics in depth and English.
Due to the situation created after the 2020 Artsakh war and the blockade from December 2022, the right to education of the children living in the Republic of Artsakh has been continuously violated, and now they have been forcibly displaced from their homeland.
About 30,000 children were deprived not only of food, heating and other living conditions and the right to live in their native homes, they were also deprived of uninterrupted education. Due to the lack of heating and fuel, the students did not attend school regularly and were left behind in the educational process. After forced displacement and finding themselves in a difficult situation, we should not forget their right to education and make their days more interesting.
In Armenia, there is a disproportionate distribution of quality education opportunities, especially in rural, border communities. In schools, children usually do not see the applicability of the subjects in their daily lives and the perspective of the connection between the knowledge gained and their own lives. Now that problem is more visible when involving the children displaced from Artsakh in the educational processes in Armenia. In many cases, in addition to school education, they also need extracurricular activities to make everyday life more interesting.
In such a situation prevailing in Artsakh, it is necessary to organize complementary educational programs as effectively as possible, which will soften the educational gap to a certain extent and children will have the opportunity to receive additional education and to some extent realize their right to education. Volunteer teachers from Armenia and the Diaspora are enrolled in the "Matemik in Artsakh" program, in addition to that, the program also has an organizational team whose function is to ensure smooth coordination of the program and increase the effectiveness of the program.
In such a situation, it is necessary to give children the opportunity to discover subjects in other directions and perspectives, in particular to apply them, along with school teaching methods. It is important to have such a teaching plan during which children will be able to create, analyze, translate, etc.
Mathemagic Schools, with qualified teachers, a well-defined program and an organizational team, currently enables children to discover and explore mathematics, create math games, study scientific papers, do business analysis, translate math books, learn English, and more.
TEAM:
Our team includes many patriotic volunteer teachers from different corners of Armenia and the world who work devotedly with children. During the last two years, we managed to have more than 250 volunteer teachers and more than 30 volunteers in the organizational team.
And despite the short period of activity, the main team of Matemik managed to register great results in Armenia and Artsakh.
To make all this a reality, a total of 345,000 AMD is required per month.
The "Matemik in Artsakh" program was implemented in three phases (fall of 2021, spring of 2022, the third started in December 2022), during which (2021-2022) with the help of more than 50 volunteer teachers, 200 remote Artsakh more than 100 students had additional extracurricular activities in school subjects, and 21 Artsakh children received computers. As a result of the 3rd stage of the project, 131 students of the Republic of Artsakh from different regions experienced academic growth. Academic growth was determined by pre- and post-course assessment tests. Within the framework of the project, we cooperated with the "ImDprots" website, where the final evaluation of the students was carried out.
Currently, our 12th-grade students are working with volunteers to get admitted to Armenian universities. The goal is not only university admission but also shaping young individuals interested in education and ready to use their potential for the future development of their homeland, including through volunteering.
Please, find the project budget here.
Mathemagic School, operating in the Vahagni community of the Lori region, continues not only to improve the English proficiency of local children, but also to create an environment where they gain knowledge, support, and confidence in their own abilities.
Teamwork, care, and dedication are the foundations upon which every lesson is built.
One of Matemik's students, Gayane Gevorgyan, is currently in the 11th grade and actively involved in Matemik’s educational programs.
Through the program, Gayane has learned several programming languages, including Python and HTML, participated in subject-based clubs, and is currently preparing for university entrance exams in Armenian language. Her experience demonstrates the broad educational opportunities provided by Matemik and their lasting impact on students’ academic development.
One of our Matemik students, Robert Sahakyan, is currently studying in the 6th grade and actively participates in the mathematics club. He joined the program after learning about it through social media and has shown strong motivation and engagement throughout his learning journey.
During his participation, Robert has significantly improved his mathematical knowledge and skills. He has benefited from the high-quality educational environment and the dedicated support of his teacher, Narine Vardanyan, whose guidance and well-structured lessons have played an important role in his academic progress.
Robert’s experience reflects the positive impact of Matemik in creating valuable learning opportunities for schoolchildren, helping them grow academically and develop deeper subject knowledge.
Margarita Gasparyan from Ijevan, who attends our mathematics and Armenian language classes, shares that the lessons are organized in an engaging and accessible way, which has helped her understand new topics more quickly and apply them in practice.
“Matemik has not only helped strengthen my knowledge, but has also increased my interest and motivation to learn.”
Our educational program continues at Mathemagic School, located in the Vahagni community of the Lori region.
By receiving free education, our students have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge in English and mathematics, gaining essential skills and building a solid foundation for their future.
We have already started our online group classes. At the moment, 32 groups are operating, where our volunteer teachers conduct lessons. Our teachers make the classes engaging and effective by using various methods such as interactive games and exercises, pair and group work, discussions and project-based tasks, as well as thematic lessons that foster critical thinking.
In our online groups, children study mathematics, Armenian language, history, English, and various skills that are essential in the modern world.
Before the start of classes, we organize training sessions for volunteers. Our team works with mentor Ani Gyadukyan, who not only shares theoretical knowledge but also helps volunteers with effective lesson planning and organization.
This process is of particular importance to us, as the preparation of volunteers directly affects the quality of the lessons and the achievements of our students. In addition to the mentor’s support, both our new and experienced volunteers share their experiences during the meetings. In the coming days, additional professional online trainings are planned, which will also help improve the skills of our teachers.
Today at the Mathemagic School in Vahagni, we had a special class with the participation of volunteer Jacob Tafejian, who came from the USA and has Armenian roots. The class was organized in cooperation with Birthright Armenia.
Jacob will be teaching math in English to our children over the next month — a new and inspiring experience for our students.
On July 5, Matemik NGO organized a creative event for its learners.
During the workshop, participants worked with clay, creating handmade dishes decorated with traditional Armenian patterns.
Afterwards, we held an open conversation with the students, where they shared their achievements, challenges, and goals. At the end of the event, each learner received a certificate of participation.
The classes of the "Matemiկ in Artsakh" program are ongoing. In the photo, you can see one of our very first students, Almira Margaryan, who is now teaching mathematics to our youngest group—fourth graders.
As Teacher Almira mentions, their lessons are never monotonous and include discussions, questions, and lots of exercises.
Recently, a meeting was held with our volunteer teachers.
During the meeting, Narek Piloyan from the Matemiկ team conducted a webinar on "How to Organize an Effective Online Lesson."
The meeting was productive in terms of experience sharing and strengthening knowledge.
One of the methods used in English lessons at Mathemagic School in Vahagni is shouting dictation, which enhances our students' listening, writing, reading, and speaking skills.
Currently, the school has two groups—one for older students and one for younger students—who study mathematics and English using modern teaching methods.
We always prioritize the development of the skills and knowledge of our volunteer teachers, and for this purpose, we periodically organize various meetings and seminars.
Recently, our new group of volunteer teachers had the opportunity to meet online with Serob Khachatryan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology at Yerevan State University (YSU).
Mr. Khachatryan presented the current state of education, its challenges, and the impact of extracurricular programs to the volunteer teachers. There was also a Q&A session.
On December 29, the final class of this year took place at Mathemagic Schools.
What did we do today? The amazing Matemiks presented their small final projects, during which they introduced themselves and their village, Vahagni, in English. They also presented topics that interest them.
We also discussed our future plans and enjoyed a festive atmosphere.
Currently, 13 local children receive free education at Vahagni's Mathemagic School.
The methods used by our specialists make the learning process more enjoyable. Children attend classes with enthusiasm and love learning.
One of the methods is applying acquired knowledge in practice. For example, during one of the English club lessons, the children learned about pizza, its preparation process, and ingredients while making pizza themselves.
The online classes of "Matemik in Artsakh" are ongoing.
Matemiks (students) don't just study mathematics. Currently, about 30 Matemiks are preparing for the unified exams and, together with our volunteer teachers, are studying mathematics, Armenian language, and foreign languages.
On November 9, a meeting was held with the graduates of "Matemik" who participated in the "Matemik in Artsakh" program this year. They attended online sessions with our volunteer teachers and successfully enrolled in various universities in Armenia.
The meeting was also attended by our students who are preparing for the unified exams this year and, with the help of volunteer teachers, are planning to continue their academic journeys in universities.
During the meeting, our students got to know each other through games and practical activities, discussing their future educational goals and further involvement with "Matemik."
And, of course, at the end, a traditional photo, gifts, and certificates for the graduates!
At Mathemagic school (Lori region, Vahagni), our students learn English for free. English language classes last three days a week for two hours.
In addition to grammar, our specialist conducts the lessons in English through conversations and games.
Some pictures from our classes։
Presenting Taguhi Baghramyan, one of our graduates from the "Matemik in Artsakh" program. She has been admitted to the Political Science department at the V. Brusov State University. As you know, we have conversations with our graduates who have success stories, and here is an excerpt from our conversation with her:
"While I was still in Artsakh, I quickly registered for Armenian and English courses as soon as I learned about 'Matemik.' After some time, we first got acquainted with the instructors, and then the lessons began. The classes were conducted in an interesting way and were never tiring. In addition to studying with my school teacher, Ms. Harutyunyan, we also worked on exam materials in Armenian language classes with Ms. Arev. No matter how difficult the question was, Ms. Arev always tried to present the answer in a way that we would never forget. I was fascinated by her teaching process. I must also add that in difficult times, teachers like Ms. Arev, who were always by our side, shared our pain, and understood us well, are very much needed in our country.
When I moved to Armenia and started attending school, the exemplary and compassionate teacher Ms. Pashyan, who became close to us from the very first day, included me in a group for individual language lessons and started tutoring me on an equal basis with her other students free of charge, for which I am very grateful to her. Ms. Arev also continued the lessons, and thanks to their combined efforts, I was able to score well in Armenian. In English lessons, we not only expanded our vocabulary and studied grammar, but also did exercises in the form of games. One can talk endlessly about Ms. Narine and never get bored. The communication with Ms. Narine was so friendly that if we talked outside of class, the conversation would never end. Ms. Narine is unique as a person. Meeting Ms. Narine, I realized that there are still people who can understand and try to help. Words are not enough to describe Ms. Narine, and I am sure those who have met her will agree with me.
I am also grateful to the entire 'Matemik' team for designing this program, providing quality education, and surrounding us with such wonderful people."
Our success story today is about a graduate named Lusine Baghdasaryan. As we all know, artificial intelligence is rapidly taking over the world, and Lusine is keeping up with this global trend. She has been admitted to the Artificial Intelligence department at the National Polytechnic University of Armenia (NPUA).
Here’s our conversation with her:
"Matemik has been one of the greatest achievements during my developmental years. This isn’t just a cliché statement that anyone might say; it’s my genuine gratitude to Matemik. I initially participated in Olympiada study groups and webinars, where I gained a wealth of knowledge, made good friends, and had the privilege of learning from exceptional mentors. Later, I decided to acquire professional skills and specialized in the field of QA. The knowledge I gained from Matemik played a significant role in helping me make one of the most important decisions of my life-choosing my career path. Now that I've been accepted into the university, I'm deeply thankful to Matemik for leaving an invaluable mark on my journey."
We present Narine Manukyan, who was admitted to the History Department of Gavar State University with a full scholarship through the "Mathematician in Artsakh" program.
She shared her thoughts and experiences:
"After the war, when we moved to Armenia, I lost all hope and didn’t want to continue my studies. In January, I decided that I needed to take the Armenian language exam. I started preparing and, fortunately, passed it, which boosted my confidence. Time was short, and I had to quickly study the history of Armenia, but I couldn’t find a specialist to help me. Then one of my classmates advised me to join the group 'Education as a Weapon.' I followed his advice and never regretted it – the specialists there are truly amazing. It was there that I met comrade Karapetyan, and a few days later, we began our lessons. From the very beginning, I was captivated by his teaching method. I am immensely grateful to him for everything he has done for me. In just 4 months, I was able to study and review the entire program and confidently passed the exam."
Recently, we summarized the one-year activities and graduation year of Mathemagic school.
Children studying in the mathematics school received certificates of participation.
During this one year, the progress of the children is shown by the results they recorded during the final final tasks, as noted by our teachers who work with the students, the children have also become more self-confident and hardworking.
During this one year, the children learned different mathematical topics using modern methods, starting from divisibility of natural numbers and logic games with matches, to the concept of monomial and solving linear equations. They also improved their spoken English skills.
Classes are ongoing at Mathemagic. Learning math and English in an efficient way makes it more interesting.
The methods of our teachers help students develop a love for the subjects. Thanks to the games, open classes, and direct atmosphere, children's knowledge has increased, which is also documented by parents. Our team regularly meets with the parents of children attending school.
For example, playing Alias in English helps our students develop their language skills from an early age. This method is used by Hranush, who is an English teacher.
Online classes with displaced children from Artsakh continue. During this period, regular conversations were organized with volunteer teachers to discuss the children's progress. The volunteer teachers say that the children come to the classes with great love and responsibility and actively participate in them.
Within the framework of the project, we continue to work with more than 120 students who study foreign languages, science subjects, mathematics, Armenian language, etc.
At the moment, 35 volunteer teachers are working with displaced children from Artsakh.
Students have extracurricular online classes in various school subjects: mathematics, English, Russian, chemistry, Armenian language, biology, etc. The number of groups exceeds 40, and the number of students exceeds 120.
On December 22, together with our partners, we organized a wonderful surprise course for children forcibly displaced from Artsakh.
The training and surprise gifts were prepared by CFW Armenia.
During the course, the children were introduced to cyber security, and at the end of the meeting, the participating children received gifts.
How have the last few weeks been at Mathemagic?
Recently, that was active in Mathemagic schools.
We had a number of important educational meetings during which the children learned about computers, financial literacy and Thanksgiving in addition to mathematics.
All this is about the program "Matemik in Artsakh". Our volunteer teachers continue to work with our children from Artsakh, thanks to them, around 300 students study school subjects and make their everyday life more educational and enjoyable.
