We are laying the grounds for the future of precision medicine and modern biotechnologies in Armenia!

What does the future hold for the way we prevent and cure diseases, and produce and utilize food? There is one answer: genomics! As people learn more and more about our genetic make-up, and as they invent revolutionary technologies to study and manipulate genetic information from various organisms, new opportunities are arising.

Genomics is already revolutionizing our reality:

  • COVID-19 vaccines contain the genetic material of the virus,
  • genetic tests guide drug treatment
  • genetic modifications increase crop yields
  • genetic research evaluates and confirms the ancestry of the population
  • diseases are treated by genetic engineering.

All of this is thanks to advances in genomics. And all of this is happening today! The future is arriving at an unprecedented rate, and we need to keep up!

Is Armenia ready to keep up with the genomic realities of today?

Not exactly! We are slowly adopting modern technologies to perform experiments in the lab and produce datasets to study the genetic make-up of the crops, the insects, the microbes, the fungi inhabiting different parts of Armenia․ Plants and insects resistant to climate change and parasites are a solution the world is looking for today and that may be found in the biodiversity of Armenia!

We are also slowly generating data about the genetic make-up of the Armenian population: a population whose homogeneity may turn out to be a treasury for genomics studies.

Where do all these unique genomic datasets go? Are they serving the best interests of Armenia?

Not really! The datasets produced from the biodiversity of Armenia are stored and analyzed on the servers of the US and the UK, Europe, Russia, etc. Sometimes, we don’t even have full access to the datasets produced from the Armenian samples! Therefore, we don’t fully benefit from the discoveries made using Armenian datasets.

We will build the first publicly accessible centralized and well-maintained computing infrastructure in Armenia to safely store, annotate and analyze our genomics data.

Genomic data is stored, annotated, and computed using a hardware and software setup that differs from other domains. There are certain standards of data protection and safety on one hand, and sharing and collaborative solutions on the other hand. Also, domain-specific technical requirements are in place. Such standards are usually defined and set up by dedicated bioinformatics institutes that have existed for more than 20 years in Europe, the US, China, Japan, and other places (e.g. the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Swiss Bioinformatics Institute, etc). These institutes set up data storage infrastructure, set standards for data usage, create software, and educate researchers in data analysis.

The Armenian Bioinformatics Institute is dedicated to building this infrastructure for Armenia!

This computing infrastructure will be open for all the students and scientists engaged in life science training and research in Armenia!

In collaboration with our international partners, we will train a system administrator to set up, maintain and manage access to the infrastructure, according to international standards. The students studying bioinformatics will use it as a training ground, and the researchers in need of data analysis will safely upload their data to the server, analyze it with the support of our bioinformaticians and engage in cutting-edge research and innovation.

We will provide the necessary training to build talent and support Armenian researchers on their way to genomic discoveries!

Bioinformatics is the art of the analysis of genomics datasets to produce biological knowledge. Researchers and students in various institutions in Armenia are slowly adapting to the realities of the 21st century: they need to learn how to analyze their data! And this is what the primary mission of the Armenian Bioinformatics Institute is: to teach and support the analysis of locally produced genomic datasets, empowering life science students and researchers to walk hand-in-hand with modern developments. Have a look at the OMICSS-2021 summer school!

This is only the beginning!

The proposed setup will be enough to support nearly 20 researchers and 40 students annually and will serve its purpose well for at least 5 years. With the help of future donations and grants, we will expand this infrastructure to meet the growing demands in data storage and analysis.

Expected impact

  • Around 30 life scientists and 40 students will access the infrastructure annually
  • In the first, the second, the third and the following years of using the infrastructure, we will publish 3, 5, 10 and 10+ papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • We will develop at least 2-5 publicly available tools for analysis of genomic datasets every year
  • At least two system administrators will be trained in collaboration with the international partners of the project
  • At least 20 young scientists will receive extensive training in the field of computational genomics and bioinformatics
  • Within the first five years of using the infrastructure, we will engage in and provide bioinformatics support to more than 20 projects in collaboration with Armenian institutions. This will drastically increase the scientific output of these projects.
  • Within five years, the talent and capacity that we will build through this project will attract at least two modern biotech companies to Armenia

Learn about us and join us!

We are a team of bioinformatics researchers and industry representatives working at the Armenian Bioinformatics Institute. We have around 20 experts, some with 20+ years of experience in the field, some with 10+, and some with 5+. And this year, we have managed to grow bioinformatics talent and engage 12 more students and young researchers! During the first year of establishment, we have increased the number of bioinformatics researchers in Armenia 4 times, sealed a deal with 3 industry collaborators from the US and the UK, and published 6 papers! All of these are the results of us all - in Armenia and abroad - uniting our forces to achieve a well-understood goal. Will you join your forces with us too?

Make sure your children benefit from the miracles of genomic medicine!

Genomic data science is the cornerstone for the adaptation of innovative approaches to precision medicine. The way we diagnose, prevent and cure diseases will be a matter of how good we are at grasping what the genomics data means! Support our initiative today, to make sure that our country will have enough professionals and enough knowledge for a healthier future tomorrow!

Support the Armenian economy by building the foundations for smart agriculture, genetic engineering, and more!

Genetic engineering enables manipulations for increasing the resistance of crops to climate change and parasites sometimes increasing the yield by more than 10 times! There is a huge potential for Armenia to discover novel genetic elements of interest to agriculture. Why? Because the natural variation of climatic conditions in Armenia has prepared a cradle of wild-type species with interesting properties. We just need to study the genetic features of the species and leverage the potential! Support us in building the foundations for such activities today, to see how we leap in the future tomorrow!

Support us in entering a safe, healthy, and wealthy age of biology!
