4 months agoIf you're reading this, then you remember the tragic events of September 2023, when over 100,000 Armenians were forced to flee Artsakh, leaving behind their homes, memories, careers, and dreams for the future.
Tens of thousands of women are now striving to start over in Armenia. Through Slatsk (Սլացք), they gain practical skills, emotional support, a path to employment and ultimately, self-reliance.
Run by Hub Artsakh, Slatsk is a comprehensive re-skilling and empowerment program that was designed to strengthen professional identities, restore confidence, and provide employment pathways for women from Artsakh who have lost everything except their skills and determination. This flagship initiative was launched in January 2024, soon after displacement. Since then,
Our alumni have since opened home-based businesses, rejoined the workforce with renewed motivation, or made new, steady strides towards employment.
Out of 100,000 displaced Armenians from Artsakh, 66% are women and children. Around 46% have resettled in Yerevan (where Hub Artsakh is based), while others live across Kotayk and Ararat, regions neighboring the capital (RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs).
These are not simply statistics. Behind every number is a mother who was once a respected professional, now uncertain how to feed her family. A woman who ran her own business, now afraid to submit job applications.
Goodwill alone is no longer enough. The path forward demands comprehensive support systems that specifically address women's employment barriers, from skills training and credential recognition to childcare support and mental health services.
In these new and uncertain environments, women face the dual challenge of emotional recovery and economic survival. They have lost familiar support networks, steady income opportunities, but most importantly, their self-confidence.
Slatsk goes beyond simple job placement to create a complete ecosystem of support.
Based on our job market analysis and stakeholder consultations, we intend to implement future rounds of Slatsk in human resources management and social work.
Across the past four cohorts, we’ve supported over a hundred women to gain hands-on skills in tailoring, beauty, food business, administrative work, and accounting. We also offered entrepreneurship and economic guidance, mental health support, and soft skills training.
Dozens of our alumni have begun supporting their families again, step by step, with resolve and determination. We accompany them even after the program, connecting them to job opportunities, markets, and ongoing mentorship.
Our alumni join a supportive community of women who share their experiences, challenges, and dreams. They uplift each other, find healing, and rediscover purpose.
The women of Artsakh have already demonstrated extraordinary resilience by surviving displacement and protecting their families through unimaginable hardship. Now, with targeted support through Slatsk, that resilience can be channeled into economic empowerment, professional fulfillment, and community revitalization.
Across the past rounds, we received 600+ applications, reflecting the strong demand for reskilling opportunities and high interest in joining the program.
Hundreds more women are waiting to join the Slatsk program.
Our goal is to raise €15,000 to fund the next 25 women in the upcoming 5th cohort.
Each additional €15,000 raised will allow 25 more women to participate.
Each woman’s full participation in Slatsk costs €600, which covers training, materials, mentoring, and psychosocial support. Smaller contributions fund specific parts of her journey.
Hub Artsakh is a community-focused non-profit organization founded in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh, in 2021. After being forcefully displaced to Armenia in September 2023, Hub Artsakh resumed its operations out of Yerevan.
